Mixing is the process of turning your basic tracks into a song that sounds polished, marketable, and even broadcast-ready by taming dynamic range, perfectly balancing each sound at each musical moment, and reducing distracting or displeasing areas of the tonal palette.  In combination with careful editing, it can be an opportunity to fix minor flubs, nudge the pitch of vocals, and generally tighten things up.  It's also the chance to match ambiance, enhance character, or indulge a certain vibe.
